PORTRAITS FROM THE FLORIDA AQUARIUM

In 2011, Alex Kaufman interned at the Florida Aquarium in Tampa, doing photographic dolphin research and database programming. He would stay after work to watch the animals and marvel at the beautiful underwater ecosystem. Kaufman would often bring his camera, learning how to work around the many restrictions of photographing in an aquarium (dim lighting, thick/refractive glass, unpredictable/fast subjects).

Upon moving to St Petersburg 2 years later,, Alex has been periodically photographing at the institution, often focusing on artistic and rare portraiture work of the aquariums some 20,000 inhabitants.

This series of photographs captures much of the aquarium's animals during after-visitor hours, when people are at a minimum and the aquarium really comes to life.
